Character Interview with Jorik, Children of Shadows

Our special guest today is Jorick, a very intriguing vampire.

Tell me a little about yourself.
My name is Jorick. I suppose I should mention I’m a vampire? I should also be up front; I don’t like interviews. As you can see, my author has decided to accompany me to make sure I’m “truthful”. Even so, I’m not discussing my underwear, no matter how many fan girls ask. And yes, they have asked before.

Where are you from?
I suppose you might say that my newest residence is in Maine, though at the moment we’re overseas on Guild business. No, I suppose that’s a stretch. We initially went overseas on Guild business, but a personal matter arose, and…well…we’ve gotten involved with trying to eradicate a vampire cult. Maybe. There are a lot of factors involved. It’s really not our problem and yet…well, someone has to handle it.

What’s the most flattering thing anyone has ever said about you?
Hm. I’ve gotten a lot of compliments over the centuries. I suppose the most flattering thing probably came from Kateesha, a former…acquaintance, but I couldn’t quote it. She was one for flowery declarations and flattery. My human lover, Katelina, thinks a lot of compliments, though she doesn’t normally communicate them. I can read them in her mind, of course, but I suppose it would be nice for her to say it. I do take the time to compliment her regularly.

Describe your ideal mate.
The ideal mate is an elusive creature that few actually find. Not to say that I’ve settled by any means, but…well I didn’t plan on being involved with a human. There. I said it. *glares at his author* I don’t know anything about them, anymore. Especially not all of this modern ridiculousness. I’ve never…all my relationships since I was turned over five hundred years ago have been with vampires until now. With a human lover there are a thousand and one things to worry about. Injuries. Diseases. And then she smokes part time! They say now that that’s bad for humans. How am I supposed to cope with all of that? How do humans manage it?

What is the pet name for the love of your life?
I call Katelina “little one” frequently. I don’t know why, exactly. I suppose because she’s so fragile.
What is your biggest fear?
Losing Katelina. There was…an unfortunate incident in the past and I spent a long time suffering over it. She reminded me that I was still alive, and to lose that…to lose her… I say lose and you think I mean death, but there are other kinds of loss. For instance if another vampire claims her, or turns her. I could kill them, of course, but there’s a chance there would be repercussions. Things could get…messy. And then there’s a chance it would be someone I couldn’t defeat. To imagine her locked as a fledgling slave to some master…I can’t…thinking about it makes me want to kill someone.

Is there anything you’ve always wanted to do but haven’t done? Why haven’t you done it?
Though I think it would be interesting to visit the polar circles during the winter – I’d like to see what the Polar Night does to a vampire’s internal clock – I haven’t made it that far north or south yet. I’d also like to find a book that I haven’t read that actually looks worth reading. I’ve hit a dry spell lately. It seems most of the modern mush is -*author prods him to stop the tirade*

What’s the worst thing you’ve ever done to someone? Why?
I’ve done a lot of things you’d probably find terrible. I know Katelina would if she knew. But that’s what Executioners do. For lack of a better description, they’re like the elite vampire police. A sort of SWAT team. I managed to escape the loathsome responsibilities for a hundred years or so, but let’s say the duties have found me again. For now.

Here is the can of whip cream I promised you. What are you planning on doing with it?
I’m not sure what the purpose of whipped cream is. It looks like a cleaning supply, or a toiletry item? I suppose I’ll give it to Katelina. She knows about these things.

I shake my head at his response and smile. I’m sure Katelina will teach him all about whipped cream….

If you had complete and total control over Katelina what would you have her do?
I could have control of her, actually, if I chose to. It’s one of my more useful vampire gifts, but I don’t use it on her – I’m sorry. My author has just kindly reminded me, with an especially sharp jab to the ribs, that that’s a lie. I did use it on her once, when we first met face to face. I invited her inside and she had second thoughts, so I helped her along. I recall she was confused about why she’d accepted a stranger’s invitation, even though she thought I was, and I quote, “beautiful”.

You seem a little tense. Is something bothering you?
Besides being interviewed? It’s not your fault, I’m sure you’re perfectly nice. My author has subjected me to horrible questions in the past that soured me on the ordeal. Oh. You mean in general. Actually, yes, there are several things. Such as that aforementioned concern about someone else claiming Katelina. Then there’s the issue of a six thousand year old vampire we loosed on the world. No, we didn’t actually wake him up, but an acquaintance did, and though I know it isn’t directly my problem, I suspect it’s going to be. And of course there’s my master, Malick, who after three thousand years has gotten bored and decided to rebel against everything for the sake of entertainment. He happens to find wholesale slaughter entertaining. Technically that should be the vampire Guilds’ problem, but I don’t really see them doing anything, so I know I’ll have to eventually. And then there’s this Children of Shadows vampire cult who’s back from the dead, no pun intended, and attacking vampire strongholds. If that wasn’t enough, my traveling companions include my fledgling, his over-sexed sister, his new human, a bald tough-guy with a loud mouth, a sympathetic but often ineffective teenager, and an idiot with clown colored hair who spends too much time trying to get Katelina alone. The world is definitely not all roses.

I have some cameos in the Vampire Morsels Short Story collection, but for the most part you’ll find me in the Amaranthine series. Children of Shadows is the newest (book 6). Though it’s a series, you can pick up at any point without reading the previous books. Children of Shadows is available at:
